Razorback in a bad weather window: turn around at Diamantina
The Razorback to Mount Feathertop is mostly above treeline. Why “we drove from Melbourne” is not a weather forecast, and the Plan B hut walk when the ridge is in cloud.

The Razorback

Parks Victoria’s Razorback is a classic because it is exposed. The usual mistake is walking it anyway because the beds are booked. Wind and fog on a treeless ridge are how parties finish late or get overdue.
Check the weather before you leave the car
Check BOM alpine forecasts and Parks Victoria the morning you go. Pack a shell even on “fine” listings. If you need GPS to stay on the Razorback in 20 metres of visibility, you should already be reversing.
A Plan B still counts. Wallace’s Hut on the High Plains, or Paradise / Dandongadale if you are on the Mansfield side, is still a High Country day.

Can I wait an hour for it to clear?
Sometimes. If the forecast is a front, waiting on the ridge is how you walk back in worse weather. Diamantina is the turnaround that still lets you drive to a hut walk.
