Things to do in Alpine National Park

Pick one main outing. The park is too big to “do it all” from Melbourne in a day. Official conditions: Parks Victoria.

One main thing

Do not try Bogong, the Razorback and a 4WD loop on a Melbourne same-day run.

Sleep near the start

Mount Beauty for Bogong, Bright or Hotham for Feathertop, Falls Creek for the High Plains.

Junk weather = hut or town

If the forecast is poor, walk a hut track or stay in town. Do not add a second summit as a consolation prize.

  1. 1

    Mount Bogong via Staircase Spur

    Hard · 8–10+ hours

Victoria’s highest summit. Steep, arduous, exposed plateau. Base in Mount Beauty. First-light start — not a Bright café add-on.

  2. 2

    The Razorback to Mount Feathertop

    Hard · ~22 km return

Classic high ridge from Diamantina Hut. Weather window is the whole plan. Cloud at the carpark is a cancel.

  3. 3

    Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing

    Multi-day · book first

Official 37 km, 3 days, booked tent platforms at Cope Hut and Dibbins Hut. Book first, car shuffle second, walk third.

  4. 4

    Wallace’s Hut & High Plains

    Easy–moderate

Short heritage hut walk among snow gums. Honest first high-plains hour from Falls Creek when the road is open.

  5. 5

    Dandongadale Falls

    West-side lookout

Victoria’s tallest waterfall on the Mansfield–Whitfield side — a different corner of the park from Bogong.

  6. 6

    4WD & remote valleys

    4WD · VERIFY closures

Wonnangatta, Dargo High Plains Road, Blue Rag — seasonal, often closed, Wilderness Zone rules. Not a sedan loop.
