Before the walks
Weather, map & stay first
The first choice
Stay overnight — do not try this as a Melbourne day trip
Most rushed trips fail on the Hume, not on the mountain. Sleep in Bright or Mount Beauty. Then pick one walk.
Most first overnights
High-country day from Bright
- · One outing, not two summits
- · Layers even if the café is warm
- · Feathertop is a different morning
Open Bright plan →
Fit · Mount Beauty base
Bogong summit day
- · First light at Mountain Creek
- · Tree-line turnaround if weather fails
- · 8–10+ hours return for a fit party

Alpine weather is not town weather
- Snow possible any month on Bogong, Feathertop and the High Plains.
- No reliable mobile on much of the high plains — 000 needs reception.
- Huts are emergency refuge, not booked beds.
- Seasonal 4WD closures are real — Wonnangatta is not a sedan loop.
- Resort winter entry is not a Parks Victoria park fee.
- Official safety: Parks Victoria safety
Itineraries
Plans that respect drive time
Full day on the ground (overnight in Bright first)
High-country day from Bright
Sleep in Bright, then pick one extra (a Harrietville valley walk, a short High Plains hut if the road is open, or a lookout drive). Do not treat Feathertop as a casual afternoon add-on.
Open plan →
7–9 hours walking + Hotham access
Razorback day (Feathertop)
Diamantina Hut to Mount Feathertop and back on the Razorback. The weather decides. Do not squeeze this into a Melbourne day trip.
Open plan →
8–10+ hours return, or overnight fully self-sufficient
Bogong day (or self-sufficient overnight)
Mountain Creek to the Bogong plateau via Staircase Spur. First light start. Tree-line turnaround if weather fails.

FAQ
Common Alpine National Park questions
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is there an entry fee for Alpine National Park?
Parks Victoria does not currently charge a vehicle day-entry fee for Alpine National Park itself — VERIFY live. Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resort vehicle permits in declared snow season are separate resort fees, not park fees. FHAC tent platforms are booked camping, not a day pass.
How long from Melbourne to Alpine National Park?
About 3.5–5+ hours depending on which town you use (Bright, Mount Beauty, Hotham, Mansfield, Omeo) and on the roads. It is not a Melbourne day trip. Stay overnight if you want a summit or a High Plains day.
What should I do first on a first visit?
Sleep in a gateway town, then pick one: Wallace’s Hut if you want a short High Plains introduction; the Razorback if you are fit and the forecast is decent; Staircase Spur only if you are based in Mount Beauty and very fit. Do not do Bogong and Feathertop in one day from Melbourne.
Is weather really that different from town?
Yes. Summits and high plains can freeze in any month while Bright is mild. Pack layers and a shell. Check BOM alpine forecasts, Parks Victoria and VicEmergency — this site does not show live closures.
Is this site official Parks Victoria?
No. Independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For alerts, camping and official rules use Parks Victoria only (13 1963).
