Itineraries
Guide updated · verify Parks Victoria the morning you go
These plans are built for real high-country overnights — drive time, weather windows and energy included — not fantasy “do everything” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-trip checklist (PDF / HTML) and the practical planner (PDF / HTML).
Every itinerary defers to Parks Victoria for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them — and only when official status is open.
Which plan fits you?
- High-country day from Bright — first overnight; one outdoor block, not two summits.
- Razorback day — weather window from Diamantina Hut; cancel if the ridge is in cloud.
- Bogong day — Mount Beauty base; first light at Mountain Creek.
- Falls to Hotham intro — book platforms, then shuffle, then walk.
- Shoulder-season quiet — Plan B hut / town / waterfall when summits are off.
If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always upgrade on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on the highway home.

Full day on the ground (overnight in Bright first)
High-country day from Bright
First High Country overnight — not a Melbourne day-trip
Sleep in Bright, then pick one extra (a Harrietville valley walk, a short High Plains hut if the road is open, or a lookout drive). Do not treat Feathertop as a casual afternoon add-on.

7–9 hours walking + Hotham access
Razorback day (Feathertop)
Fit parties with a clear weather window
Diamantina Hut to Mount Feathertop and back on the Razorback. The weather decides. Do not squeeze this into a Melbourne day trip.
Open plan →

8–10+ hours return, or overnight fully self-sufficient
Bogong day (or self-sufficient overnight)
Very fit parties based in Mount Beauty
Mountain Creek to the Bogong plateau via Staircase Spur. First light start. Tree-line turnaround if weather fails.

3 days / 2 nights once booked
Falls to Hotham — how to start planning
Fit parties ready to book tent platforms
Heathy Spur to Mt Loch via Cope Hut and Dibbins Hut. Book first. Shuffle second. Walk third. Not a spontaneous long weekend.

Two nights in a gateway town
Quieter shoulder-season plan
People who will cancel summits and still have a trip
High Plains hut / town / waterfall Plan B when the Razorback and Bogong are in cloud. Shoulder season is not “empty and easy” — it is ice, closures and shorter days.

Itineraries FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Which itinerary should I print first?
If this is your first High Country overnight, print the Bright high-country day. If you already have a clear weather window and fitness, print Razorback or Bogong — not both. Falls to Hotham only if platforms are already booked.
Can I combine two itineraries in one day?
No. Each plan is already a full alpine or town-plus-one-walk day. Stacking two timelines is how groups finish the Great Alpine Road in the dark.
