The failure named in the title is treating Alpine National Park like a capital lookout loop. It is Victoria’s largest national park. Mount Bogong, the Razorback and the High Plains sit behind a proper drive, seasonal roads, and alpine weather.

The drive is the first walk
Bright is often quoted around 3.5–4 hours from Melbourne in normal traffic; Mount Beauty and Hotham add more. Friday afternoons, snow-season chains, and High Plains Road closures add time. Build a buffer or do not go.
If you leave Melbourne after breakfast hoping for Feathertop, you will be walking down in the dark or skipping the summit.
Plan B when you already booked the car
Sleep in Bright or Mount Beauty. Do a town-and-one-short-walk day if weather is poor. Save the summit for a forecast window. That still counts as visiting Alpine National Park.
Do not “make it worthwhile” by adding Wonnangatta. Remote 4WD is a different trip class.

Can I see Alpine National Park as a Melbourne day trip?
You can spend hours in a car. You will not honestly walk Staircase Spur or the Razorback and return the same night with margin. Overnight in a gateway town.
