The Razorback to Mount Feathertop
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks Victoria
Classic high ridge from near Mt Hotham (Diamantina Hut / Great Alpine Road) to Mount Feathertop (1,922 m), Victoria’s second-highest peak. Mostly above treeline, extremely exposed. Weather window is the whole plan.
Do not pair: Do not add Bungalow Spur as a “loop finish” unless the second car and the hours were planned last night. Improvised spur exits create overdue parties.
Turnaround: If the ridge is in cloud or the wind is knocking you off line before The Cross, turn around. Feathertop will still be there.
- Crossing the Razorback because “we drove all the way from Melbourne” in a building northerly.
- Under-estimating 22 km return above treeline and finishing the last kilometres in the dark without a lamp.
- Exposed high ridge
- 7–9 hours
- About 22 km return
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit, mountain-experienced walkers in a clear weather window

Where you start
Diamantina Hut / Great Alpine Road near Mt Hotham
Start/finish at the same carpark near Hotham, about 2.5 km Harrietville side of Hotham Village. This is a high ridge, not a valley walk from Bright.
How to get there
- Great Alpine Road to Mt Hotham. In declared snow season, resort vehicle entry / chains rules apply — those are resort fees and road rules, not Parks Victoria park entry.
- Harrietville is the lower-valley town; Hotham is the trailhead. Do not treat this as a casual stroll from Bright — you still have to drive to Hotham and allow for that time.
- Bon Accord and Bungalow Spur intersect the mountain — different start points, different days.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check the forecast like a pilot, not like a picnic. Do not cross in unsettled conditions.
- Follow the Razorback ridge toward Feathertop. Mostly above treeline — excellent views, no hiding from wind.
- Final climb to the summit is steep. Intersects other spurs (Bon Accord, Bungalow).
- Return the same way unless you have a pre-planned spur exit and a car at the other end.
What to expect
The Razorback is the sharp spine Parks Victoria tells visitors about: a high ridge from near Mt Hotham to Mount Feathertop (1,922 m). About 22 km return, 7–9 hours. You are mostly above treeline. Views are the reward; exposure is the cost.
This is a weather-window walk. Excellent on a stable summer/autumn day. Reckless in a front. Snow is possible any month on this ridge.
Logistics and day shape
Park near Diamantina Hut on the Great Alpine Road (~2.5 km Harrietville side of Hotham Village). Same carpark start and finish for the standard return. Bright or Harrietville overnight; Hotham if you want a short morning to the trailhead.
Day shape: undulating ridge, rocky in places, then a steep pull to the summit. Intersects Bon Accord and Bungalow — know which track you are on. Fuel/food last town depends on approach: Harrietville / Bright from the west, Omeo from the east, Hotham village seasonal.
Hazards, bail-outs and reverse
Wind and fog decide the day. There is little shelter. Parties who keep walking in white-out on this ridge are the ones who finish late or get overdue.
Bail-out is usually reverse to Diamantina. Do not invent a spur descent to Harrietville unless that was the plan with a car and daylight.
Pack layers, waterproofs, extra food, and a lamp. Alpine kit, not a lookout jumper.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not a shopping list on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Razorback weather Plan B.

Extra tips
- Strong fitness and mountain experience recommended. This is not a first alpine walk.
- Start/finish at the same Hotham carpark — no shuffle required for the standard return.
- If cloud is on the ridge at the carpark, you do not have a view day — you have a navigation day.
Itineraries that use this walk
Often paired with Bungalow Spur— only if energy and weather allow.
