Tours & gear around your stay

Optional High Country tour searches and alpine kit after you have chosen a base. Official Parks Victoria camping and park bookings are never affiliated.

What to bring

Practical kit for high-plains walks and changeable alpine weather

  • Waterproof / wind shellHigh plains and summits can freeze in any month — a shell is not optional
  • Insulating mid-layerBogong plateau and Feathertop ridge are wind-stripped even on “fine” summer days
  • Grip hiking bootsStaircase Spur and the Razorback punish fashion sneakers and wet grass
  • Day pack 25–40 LLayers, water, first aid and extra food — alpine days are not a lookout stroll
  • Water 2 L+High plains water is not a tap. Bivouac Hut water is not a plan
  • Fuel stove (canister)Fuel-stove-only zones exist (e.g. Macalister Springs, Tali Karng); firewood is scarce on the high plains
  • Map + compass / offline GPSFog and white-out on Bogong and Feathertop erase social-media tracks
  • PLB or satellite messengerParks Victoria notes no mobile signal in some areas — 000 needs reception. Optional planning note, not a brand pitch
  • HeadlampAlpine days eat daylight; Staircase Spur descents in the dark are a classic fail
  • Trekking polesHelpful on the steep Bogong descent and long Razorback kilometres
  • First-aid + blister kitSustained climbs punish hot spots before the summit cairn
  • Sun hat + high SPFTreeline to summit is UV-hard; snow glare in shoulder season is real
