Bungalow Spur to Mount Feathertop
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks Victoria
The valley-side climb to Mount Feathertop from Harrietville via Bungalow Spur. Forest, Federation Hut precinct, then exposed summit. Different day from the Razorback — do not mix start notes.
Do not pair: Do not walk Bungalow up and Razorback down as an improvisation.
Turnaround: If you are behind clock at the hut precinct, the summit is optional.
- Mixing Razorback kilometre notes with a Bungalow Spur start.
- Late start from Bright and a headlamp descent on tired legs.
- Steep forest-to-summit spur
- Full alpine day — often 8–11 hours
- Long return from Harrietville (verify signed km on Parks Victoria)
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit walkers who want Feathertop from the Harrietville valley, not the Hotham ridge
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Victoria before you go.

Where you start
Bungalow Spur trailhead, Harrietville
Starts in the Harrietville valley, not at Diamantina Hut. This is a long climb from much lower elevation.
How to get there
- Harrietville via Great Alpine Road. Bright is the larger overnight base ~20 minutes down-valley.
- Do not assume you can “just pop up to Feathertop” after a Bright café — this is a full day.
How to do it (step by step)
- Early start from Harrietville. Steady climb on Bungalow Spur through forest to the hut precinct, then the exposed finish.
- Federation / old hut sites are emergency context, not a booked stay.
- Summit and reverse. Do not drop the Razorback to Hotham unless a second car was placed.
What to expect
Bungalow Spur is Feathertop from the valley: longer vertical than the Razorback start, forest for hours, then the same exposed summit. Official site: Bungalow Spur Walk on Parks Victoria. Verify current signed distance and any closures.
Use this when you are based in Harrietville or Bright and do not want the Hotham road. Use the Razorback when you are already on the alpine road in a weather window.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not a shopping list on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Razorback weather Plan B.

Extra tips
- Razorback is the Hotham-side classic; Bungalow is the Harrietville-side classic. Pick one.
- Water on the spur is not a tap system — carry it.
Itineraries that use this walk

Full day on the ground (overnight in Bright first)
High-country day from Bright
Sleep in Bright, then pick one extra (a Harrietville valley walk, a short High Plains hut if the road is open, or a lookout drive). Do not treat Feathertop as a casual afternoon add-on.

7–9 hours walking + Hotham access
Razorback day (Feathertop)
Diamantina Hut to Mount Feathertop and back on the Razorback. The weather decides. Do not squeeze this into a Melbourne day trip.
Often paired with Razorback · Feathertop— only if energy and weather allow.
