Bright is the Feathertop town

Bright is where you eat and sleep if Feathertop is the goal. Harrietville is closer to Bungalow Spur. Hotham is the Razorback trailhead. Parks Victoria’s Bright / Feathertop / Dinner Plain cluster is this system.

A Melbourne day-trip that “fits in Feathertop” is how people get benighted on the ridge. Overnight in Bright or Hotham; walk the next morning.

Town day vs ridge day

A first Bright overnight is one outdoor block: a Harrietville valley walk, a High Plains hut if the road is open, or a rest-and-town day if the weather is junk. Feathertop is a separate itinerary with an early Hotham leave.

The Great Alpine Road is the spine, not a scenic extra you squeeze after a summit. Resort winter vehicle entry at Hotham is a resort fee — do not call it park entry.

FAQ — Bright / Hotham

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Razorback or Bungalow Spur?

Razorback if you can drive to Hotham in a weather window (same-car return). Bungalow if you are in Harrietville and want the valley climb. Not both unless you planned a traverse with two cars.

Can I start the Razorback from Bright in the afternoon?

No. The trailhead is Diamantina Hut near Hotham. A late Bright leave puts you on an exposed ridge with a long descent in fading light. Sleep closer, leave at dawn, or pick the Bright town-day itinerary instead.
