Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks Victoria
Official 37 km, three-day walk from Falls Creek (Heathy Spur) to Mt Hotham (Mt Loch carpark) via Cope Hut and Dibbins Hut tent platforms. High-plains travel, snow gums, river valleys and exposed ridges. Booking is mandatory for the platforms.
Do not pair: Do not add Mount Bogong via Staircase Spur on the day you finish Falls to Hotham. That is two hard days in one.
Turnaround: Weather is the main decision point. Turn back early on Day 1 if the high plains are deteriorating — bail-outs get thinner after Cope Hut.
- Arriving at Cope Hut without a tent-platform booking and expecting “it will be fine.”
- Treating June–October as a summer itinerary because the website photos show wildflowers.
- Challenging multi-day
- 3 days (Day 1 14 km · Day 2 14 km · Day 3 9 km)
- 37 km point-to-point (3 days / 2 nights — official)
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit parties who can book tent platforms and accept alpine weather
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Victoria before you go.

Where you start
Heathy Spur carpark, Falls Creek
Start on the eastern side of Rocky Valley dam wall. Heathy Spur is about 3 km by road from Falls Creek Information Centre, or walk from the village bowl via the aqueduct track. Finish is Mt Loch carpark at Mt Hotham — this is point-to-point, not a loop.
How to get there
- Falls Creek via Bogong High Plains Road (seasonal; check VicRoads + Parks Victoria). Heathy Spur carpark is ~3 km from the Falls Creek Information Centre.
- Finish: Mt Loch carpark, Mt Hotham. Drive between trailheads is about 2.5 hours — plan a car shuffle or a commercial shuttle (non-official operators; list tastefully on the tours hub, not as a park product).
- Vehicles may be left at either carpark. Do not assume winter resort access equals a summer trailhead — declared snow season uses separate resort vehicle entry.
- Best walked Falls → Hotham, roughly November–April. Parks Victoria does not recommend June–October except for experienced winter parties.
How to do it (step by step)
- Book Cope Hut and Dibbins Hut tent platforms before you leave home (Parks Victoria / bookings.parks.vic.gov.au). Do not arrive without a booking.
- Day 1: Heathy Spur → Cope Hut, 14 km. Highlights include Heathy Spur lookouts, Wallace’s Hut and Cope Hut, wildflowers in season.
- Day 2: Cope Hut → Dibbins Hut, 14 km. Panoramas from Pole 333 and views to Mount Feathertop.
- Day 3: Dibbins Hut → Mt Loch carpark, 9 km. Quintet Mine, Derrick’s Hut, then Hotham.
- Each campsite has five tent platforms (four 3 m × 3.7 m; one 4.5 m × 3 m), designed for 2–3 person tents with eyelets and movable pegs. Huts are emergency refuge only — never plan to sleep in them.
- Carry a full alpine kit. Water and toilet status at platforms: VERIFY on the live Parks Victoria page the week you walk.
What to expect
This is high-plains travel, not a coastal boardwalk. Official Parks Victoria copy: 37 km, three days, two booked tent-platform camps. You walk snow-gum woodland, snow-grass plains, rocky summits and historic hut precincts, with night skies far from town lighting.
Day shape is steady kilometres rather than one brutal stair — but you are at ~2,000 m in places, fully exposed, and you must be able to camp in wind. Huts (Cope, Dibbins, Wallace’s, Derrick’s) are heritage and emergency shelter, not booked beds.
We have not walked this crossing for this guide — planning from official Parks Victoria pages. Confirm platform sizes, water and toilets the week you go.
Logistics and day shape
Start Heathy Spur (Rocky Valley dam, Falls Creek side). Finish Mt Loch carpark, Hotham. The drive between ends is about two and a half hours. Two cars in convoy, drop one at the finish, start together — or stay in Falls / Hotham / Dinner Plain and ask an accommodation provider about a shuffle. This guide does not sell that transfer.
Day 1 14 km to Cope Hut (Wallace’s Hut is a signed heritage stop on the high plains — do not treat it as your booked camp). Day 2 14 km to Dibbins Hut on a snow plain near the Cobungra headwaters. Day 3 9 km to Hotham. Best direction is Falls → Hotham.
Book both nights before you leave. Parks Victoria: five platforms per camp, designed for 2–3 person tents. The 2026–27 camping schedule lists $19.60 peak per site (up to 3 persons; concession/school $17.70) — VERIFY on the live booking page; never treat this page as a price list.
Hazards, bail-outs and reverse
Alpine weather changes in minutes. Wind, fog, rain and snow are possible any month. Hypothermia and navigation failure in white-out are the classic killers, not “getting a bit cold.”
Turn-arounds get harder once you are committed. Day 1 is the time to reverse: if the High Plains are going to pieces, walk back to Heathy Spur / Falls Creek. Do not push on to Dibbins just because the booking exists.
Mobile coverage: Parks Victoria’s Bogong High Plains visitor material notes no mobile phone signal in some areas. 000 requires reception. Emergency+ when you have a bar. Offline maps. A PLB or satellite messenger is a realistic note for this overnight — we do not invent carrier maps or require a brand.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not a shopping list on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Razorback weather Plan B.

Extra tips
- November–April is the published hiking window; snow can still sit on the high plains in a cold spring.
- Future project works may lengthen the walk / add nodes (master plan talks about a longer experience) — always check the live page, not this snapshot.
- Self-sufficiency: tent on the platform, warm layers, waterproofs, map + compass or reliable offline GPS, extra food.
