East side rivers and history
Parks Victoria’s Omeo / Mitta Mitta cluster is river, gold history and the eastern door onto the high plains. Use it when you are touring the Great Alpine Road, not as a secret back door to Staircase Spur.
Linking to the High Plains
When Bogong High Plains Road is open, Omeo is a legitimate east door onto Wallace’s Hut country and the Falls Creek end of FHAC. When the road is shut, Omeo is still a river-and-town overnight — it is not a loophole onto Staircase Spur.
Anglers Rest and Mitta Mitta river camps follow bush-camping setbacks and fire rules. Huts on the high plains remain emergency refuge, not a booked bed if you drive up from Omeo.

FAQ — Omeo
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I drive Falls Creek to Omeo?
Bogong High Plains Road is the sealed high-plains link when it is open. It is seasonal and can close for snow and safety. VERIFY VicRoads and Parks Victoria the morning you go.
Is Omeo a base for Staircase Spur?
No. Staircase Spur is a Mount Beauty / Mountain Creek problem. Omeo is the east door onto the High Plains when that road is open, and a river-valley overnight when it is not.
