Quieter shoulder-season plan
Best for: People who will cancel summits and still have a trip
Guide updated · verify Parks Victoria the morning you go
High Plains hut / town / waterfall Plan B when the Razorback and Bogong are in cloud. Shoulder season is not “empty and easy” — it is ice, closures and shorter days.

Wallace’s Hut

Shoulder season (late autumn, early spring) can be the nicest light and the worst underfoot. Snow on the high plains is possible. Seasonal roads may still be shut.
Plan B: Wallace’s Hut if the road is open, time in Bright, Mansfield waterfalls, or a rest day. The usual mistake is packing as if shoulder season were high summer.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Do not drive toward Wonnangatta “because we have the car.” Remote 4WD in shoulder mud is how trips become recoveries.

Parking & access tips
- Seasonal road status beats any carpark tip.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Improvised 4WD
- Razorback “anyway”
Extra tips
Shoulder-season honesty
- Late autumn and early spring can be the nicest light and the worst underfoot. Ice and closed seasonal roads are the default, not a surprise.
- If High Plains Road is closed, Wallace’s Hut is closed to you. Do not invent a 4WD Wonnangatta add-on.
- Pack as if it were winter even if Bright still looks like autumn.
