Mansfield & Whitfield

Western approaches: King Valley, Dandongadale Falls (Victoria’s tallest), Paradise Falls, and Howqua / Bluff country. A different park corner from Bogong.

  • Best for: West-side waterfalls, Howqua approaches, horse-yard country (peak-season bookings)
  • Time: Day from Mansfield if roads are open; overnight if you add Bluff / Howqua
  • Mansfield is about 2.5–3 hours from Melbourne — still not “a waterfall after lunch and home for dinner” if you add unsealed miles.

West side, different problems

Alpine National Park is huge. Mansfield–Whitfield is waterfalls, valleys and 4WD/forest roads, not snow-pole plains. Parks Victoria visitor guide for Mansfield is the official PDF to download.

Howqua Hills Historic Area is adjacent management — do not assume national-park camping rules without reading the site page.

What a west-side day looks like

A sane first west-side day is Mansfield as the last town, then one waterfall precinct (Dandongadale or Paradise Falls), then back to town before dark. Unsealed sections after rain are how people invent a recovery.

Do not treat this corner as a consolation prize for a cancelled Razorback. It is a different park problem: valleys, forest roads and waterfall approaches, not snow-pole plains.

FAQ — Mansfield

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I see Dandongadale and Bogong in one day?

Not as a sane plan from Melbourne or even from Bright. They are different corners of a very large park.

Is Paradise Falls a substitute for Feathertop?

No. It is a west-side waterfall day from Mansfield. Use it when you chose this corner of the park, or as Plan B when high plains roads are shut — not as a “quick look” after a cancelled Razorback from Hotham.
