Mount Beauty & Mount Bogong
Guide updated · verify Parks Victoria
The practical north-east base for Victoria’s highest peak: Mountain Creek trailhead, Tawonga, and the Kiewa Valley. Sleep here for Bogong — not in Bright for the restaurants.
- Best for: Staircase Spur / Eskdale parties, overnight at Mountain Creek, Kiewa Valley logistics
- Time: Full day on the mountain + overnight in Mount Beauty; do not squeeze from Melbourne
- About 4–4.5 hours from Melbourne via the Hume and Kiewa Valley Highway in normal conditions — VERIFY VicRoads. Not a capital day-trip.

Why Mount Beauty is the Bogong town
If the goal is Victoria’s highest summit, sleep in Mount Beauty or Tawonga. The Mountain Creek trailhead is a short drive. Fuel, food and a clinic sit in town. Bright is a lovely High Country town for Feathertop — it is a detour for Bogong.
Parks Victoria groups this corner as Mount Beauty and the Bogong High Plains. High Plains hut walks (Wallace’s, Cope) are a Falls Creek road problem, not a Staircase Spur add-on the same afternoon.
Access and seasonal notes
Sealed Kiewa Valley Highway to Mount Beauty. Mountain Creek is a signed side road. 4WD spurs (Camp Creek Gap for shorter Eskdale, Granite Flat) are a different access class — seasonal closures and Wilderness Zone rules apply. Public vehicles are prohibited in Wilderness Zones.
Check Parks Victoria change-of-conditions the morning you leave. Example snapshot (not live): several high-elevation roads including Dargo High Plains Road and Blue Rag Range Track listed closed until 29 October 2026. That list may not close Mountain Creek — still verify.
