Base in Mount Beauty or Tawonga — not Bright. This is Victoria’s highest summit, not a lookout precinct.

Overnight only if you carry a real camp. Huts are emergency refuge. Not walked — official planning notes.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Mount Beauty logistics

Fuel, food, water bottles filled, alerts screenshot. Agree a turnaround time out loud. Headlamps for everyone.

  2. First light

    Mountain Creek

Vehicle track, then the steep spur. Bivouac Hut is halfway emergency only — limited water, do not rely on it.

  3. Tree line

    Tree line weather check

If cloud is dropping or you are already behind time, turn around. The plateau has no shelter.

  4. Descent

    The way down

Allow more time down than you think. Do not rush the last hour in the dark just to make dinner in Mount Beauty.

Extra tips

Base and bail-out

  • Sleep in Mount Beauty or Tawonga. Bright is the wrong default for this climb.
  • Bivouac Hut is halfway emergency only — limited water. Do not plan to cook or sleep there as a booked camp.
  • Tree line is the weather check. If cloud is dropping or you are already behind time, turn around.
